Radio Voces Latinas team join Unifor 87-M

Please welcome our newest Unifor Local 87-M members!

On February 26, The Canadian Industrial Labour Relations Board officially certified San Lorenzo Latin American Community Centre's radio station, Radio Voces Latinas 1610 AM as an official bargaining unit.

The small, dedicated group of broadcast journalists work at the only non-commercial Spanish-language station in Canada, and are thought to be the first Spanish-language media to organize in Canada.

The new unit at the community station includes positions such as radio hosts, sales and news directors.

The group says they are dedicated to the social justice principals that their station espouses and they would like to make sure these principles carry over to the workforce. Their organizing drive and bargaining priorities are about fairness and respect, said lead inside organizer Sandra Farias.

The group will next meet to elect a bargaining committee and discuss bargaining priorities.
