Lana Payne tells HoC about grim landscape for the media sector in Canada

On Feb 16, 2024, Unifor National President Lana Payne spoke at the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage on Feb. 15, 2024, and described the shrinking newsrooms and deserts in the Canadian media landscape. More than 5% of Unifor’s media sector membership were laid off in under 14 months (in 2023, 405 journalists and media workers. So far, this year, that number is 112.) "Canadian telecommunications and media companies have a responsibility that is bigger than shareholders,” she told the CHPC in wake of Bell’s termination of 4,800 media workers. “They have a responsibility to Canadians and to Canada. To journalism.”
